Abstract
The mechanism of arising road accidents on the example of passing collisions is analyzed. It isshown that a passing collision (a hit from behind) is the most spread types of road accidents. The issues of the car control reliability depending on the speed at the starting point of braking are considered. It is mentioned that in the changing traffic situations, the drivers select a speed at which the possibility of a road accident remains permanent. The risk level depends on the tasks set to the
drivers, in particular, driving the car at a maximally average speed, driving the car uniformly by economizing on fuel.
