Abstract
The peculiarities of fatigue damages and the failure reasons of shafts in the transmission mechanisms of vehicles and technological instruments for different purposes are considered. The initiation and development sequence of fatigue cracks at the micro- and macrostructural levels in the dangerous sections of shafts with stress concentrators is introduced. The fatigue failures of shafts at co-rotating bending and torsion are classified taking into consideration the ratio of cyclic tangential and normal stresses. For quantitative estimation of the failure causes, the microhardness measurements in the surface layers of viscous and brittle failures of the shaft fractures are carried out, and
