Abstract
Urban planners have traditionally been educated to practice in a data-scarce world. Since the 1950s, urban planners have been utilising census data, which, due to its gathering only once per decade is always already out of date. This article advocates for a new set of tools and methods, particularly data mining, data visualization and simulation, that are deemed suitable to the study and analysis of the contemporary urban environment.
