Abstract
The features of development and evolution of the living areas since the era of the Industrial Revolution of the half of the 19th century to the post-industrial of late 20th century are presented, the modern trends in the design of residential buildings in foreign architectural practice are disclosed, modern criteria in quality of architecture of living areas in terms of functional, aesthetic and environmental aspects, according to the principles of sustainable development are formulated.
