The article presents the origin of prince of Artsakh-Khachen of the XVI century Mehrab bek Hasan-Jalalyan and sources of information stored about him. The first important source about the origin of Mehrab bek is the record of his brother monk Yeghishe, written in Yevdokia or Tokhat, in which he described the plight of the Armenians, and at the same time, in the memory of him, his parents and relatives, announced the important information pertaining to his homeland and to his parents, brothers and sisters. The further information about the prince of Khachen Mehrab bek Hasan-Jalalyan we learn from the undated record written on a great khachkar. The khachkar is now located in the south-eastern part of vestibule of Gandzasar monastery. It is interesting to note the fact that Mehrab bek Hasan-Jalalyan is mentioned only with titles “prince” and “paron”, and not with title “melik”, which defines the political institution of that time, as some of the rulers of other provinces of Artsakh were called, such as the memory about the ruler of Varanda Melik Avan in 1566.
