Abstract

In the last quarter of the 19th century Mkrtich Portugalyan, an outstanding social and political figure, permanent editor of the newspaper "Armenia", concerned about the fate of the Western Armenians, played a great role in the revival of national consciousness, the spread of liberation ideology and the idea of unity among Armenians. The newspaper "Armenia", published by M. Portugalyan, acting as a protector of the Armenian ethnic gene, was a real chronicle - a mirror of its time. M. Portugalyan made a great contribution to introduce the Armenian Question to the world community, the strengthening of ties between the Western Armenian and Eastern Armenian liberation circles, the education of youth in the spirit of the Armenian traditions and love for the Native land. Portugalyan’s correspondence is of great importance for revealing of the full image of him as a figure. Letters addressed to M. Portugalyan and written by himself are the primary source, which not only illuminate the picture of the late 19th century, but also summarize, along with M. Portugalyan, images of many ideologists of the Armenian liberation movement.
