Abstract

The Armenian presence in Byzantine Empire is known for a long time and is sufficiently studied. However, there are some spheres which have been out of the researchers’ sight and remained in the shadow. In scientific literature for many years it is put into circulation the list of Italian exarchates consisting of 23 names, in which is known that the 1st and 12th lords have had Armenian descent. If we know nearly everything about the first exarch Nerses, the information about Sahak Haykazn should be collected from scrappy episodes. The article touches upon the events of 640 described in the Pontifics’ journal and two records with its diagrams. One of them is the epitaph of Sahak Haykazni’s paternal cousin Grigor, which is located in Ravenna archbishop museum, and the second one is the record of Sahak’s epitaph, which is situated in Ravenna St. Vitale’s temple. There is less information about the so-called “African” second exarchate lords. In general there doesn’t exist a list of African exarchate. However it is known that a certain dynasty of Kappadokien Armenians, being branched in two parts, presented Byzantine Empire with two wealth: the first is Iraklis’ imperial wealth and the second is African exarchate wealth. In this article is presented at present revealed brief information about African exarchate.
