Abstract

The present article deals with the origin of the vowel áõ in dialectal forms like ãáõí³Ý, ïáõí³É. It is usually assumed that the vowel áõ goes back to the vowel Á (e.g. ãáõí³Ý <ãÁí³Ý). Unfortunately, the supporters of this opinion have not specially considered the change Áí >áõí (that is, the assimilative change Á >áõ, caused by labiodental í ) in dialects. The above mentioned traditional view is chal-lenged by some researchers on the basis of certain dialectal forms which have not undergone the change Áí >áõí (e.g. ѳí - ÑÁí¿°ñ³Ý, ë¿í - ëÁí/õÁóÝÇ°É), and it is believed that the sound sequence áõí is not anything else but reflection of the corresponding glide of earlier diphthongs. However, the latter assumption is not borne out by dialectal evidence, whereas a number of indisputable facts are in favour of the phonetic development Áí >áõí. A special note should be taken of the restricted and irregular nature of the change Áí >áõí, which accounts for also the unchanged forms ѳí - ÑÁí¿°ñ³Ý, ë¿í - ëÁí/õÁóÝÇ°É and the like.
