The problem of translatability or commensurability of scientific theories is one of the most important problems in the philosophy of science of the second half of the twentieth century. The article discusses how we can compare the two competing scientific theories about the same issue and on what basis we prefer this or that scientific theory, and in general if we have enough good methods (criteria, principles, rules) for such kind of comparison and selection between competing scientific theories. Modern philosophy of science, however, is trying to develop this problem in a different direction.
