The officialdoctrinal interpretation couldn’t influence popular perception, according to which different days of remembrance, being side by side in the church calendar, were consideredto be a united holiday called Saint Sargis Feast Day. This gave rise to inter-church andintercommunal cultural rivalry in areas with the mixed Armenian-Greek population(Constantinople and other places), as a result of which St. Sargis Feast Day was gradually left out from Greek church calendar being considered as Armenian. In fact, we dealwith a rare historical and cultural phenomenon when a church community (Greek) rejecting another community’s ritual and religious position (Armenian) in interfaith disputes, influences upon its own (Greek) official church, making it treat the official Armenian Church in the same way, although both the official churches have the samedoctrinal position on the issue.
2018-12-01T00:00:00+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://test.journals.sci.am/index.php/banber-ysu-armen/article/view/1108 V-VI դդ.
Works of hagiography were created in the initial times of Armenian literature jointly with historical works. They had played a major role in strengthening
Christianity. Although the Armenian hagiographical literature was formed under the influence of Greek and Assyrian literature, however, they reflected features of the cultural, social and political life of Armenia in IV-VI centuries. The main peculiarities of the Armenian sacrament were manifestations of the images
and their choice of characters. Saints were attributed to supernatural features of the ancient eastern and antiquated ideas of the blessed, magicians, gods, valiant soldiers, wizards. Such extensive coverage greatly contributed to the strengthening of the saints' worship. Armenian hagiographic writers were cautious when sanctifying women and holy foreigners. That is why many ecumenical canons stayed out of Armenian hagiography. But in the 6th century, there was a fundamental change in the Armenian Church's ideological views, and people from dominant nations were sanctifed.
“The History of Armenians” by Agathangelos, III-IV AD, is a unique source of Armenian medieval historiography. The work highlights the history and deeds of Gregory the Illuminator and king Tiridates III, who together initiated a great phenomenon, conversion from the traditional system of state paganism into Christianity and foundation of the Armenian Church. This article represents a series of records of the early medieval historian, stressing some details of mythology and pagan religion, images, and functions of Armenian pagan gods, their idols, temples and shrines, religious feasts and sacrifices. The historian also localizes the centers of the cult, tells on the struggle between local paganism and the new religion – Christianity, downfall of old sanctuaries and foundation of saint crosses, the formation of Christian churches, and appropriation of former pagan temple’s property, utensils and staff.
In the article, discussing the place and the role of philosophy in the spiritual heritage of Saint Hovhan Imastaser (Philosopher) Odznetsi (†728), it is mentioned that in the focus of theoretical interests of the prominent representative of the late period of the Armenian Christian apologetics primarily were Christological-theological questions, particularly concerning the nature of Christ, the relationship between the divine and the human, the celestial and the terrestrial, the ideal and the material, the cognitive bases of iconoclasm and idolatry, and the relationship between the sensual and rational forms of cognition in the processes of learning about the God and the world. Though in the works of Odznetsi the philosophical material is intertwined with the religious-moral inquiries, and he did not specifically consider medieval philosophical issues, however, from the point of view of the history of philosophical and theological thought, his analyses on the philosophical and social-anthropological (ethical, aesthetic) foundations of idolatry, polytheism and atheism, as well as concerning theoretical provisions of doctrinal and Christological teachings of the iconoclasts (Pavlikans and docetists) are of a great interest.
Although Grigor Narekatsi seriously complained in his masterpiece that malicious people hurt him and embittered his life, no one has so far tried to find out what gossipaccusations the poet was speaking about. The article shows that besides complaining, the poet had by unique literary-artistic means reproduced all those gossips in his Book of Lamentations, Section 45. Moreover, the poet had, in the form of confessions, sincerely presented all those events that had happened to him in his life, giving rise to the rumors of his opponents. Parallelly, analysing such confessions and gossip-accusations present in the Book of Lamentations, the author of the article comes to the conclusion that the opponents and the enemies of the poet, with malicious considerations in mind,
interpreted some of the traits of his character, behavior, activity and practice in a distorted way, accusing him of propagating futile ideas, promoting sectarian movements, neglecting native traditions, perjury, intention to respond to evil deeds in an evil way, disrespect for the rules of the church hierarchy which were being violated, imposing his own views on others and other similar acts, which, unfortunately, had been crucial for the poet.
The journal “Hyusisapayl” (published in Moscow in 1858-1864) had a significant role in the avant-garde press of the time and the development of Armenian
social thought. Faithful to its title: “A daily journal about general enlightenment and education of the nation,” – this periodical had kept in its focus the problems concerning the organization of school activities, Armenian education, instruction, public education and so on during the whole period of its publication. In the circumstances of developing new economic relations and in terms of preservation and advancement of national identity the periodical emphasized the role of school considering it as the hearth of patriotic education that in its turn included the primary problem of native language teaching. The issues concerning the training of teachers, girls’ education, the creation of textbooks and educational programs, are carefully studied in “Hyusisapayl” journal.
2018-12-01T00:00:00+00:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement##
