Abstract

The power of Pap Arshakuni (the latter was crowned in 369) was strengthened in 371 in the battle of Dzirav. However, the military leader (sparapet) Mushegh Mamikonyan from the battlefield released captured King Urnajr of Aghvan, and before that he had also returned the captured harem of Shapuh. These
disagreements became an occasion for strained relations between the king and the commander because the commander also leading the group, which had Byzantine orientation together with the clergy tried to impose their will on the king. But King Pap Arshakuni was conducting such a policy, which originated from the interests of his country. Eventually, the contradictions deepened so much, that a conspiracy was organized against the king, and Mushegh Mamikonyan was executed by the next king on charges of killing of the king.
