Abstract
An attempt is made to show that a) with only a few verbs of posture and location, the constructions “resultative participle + inflected forms of the auxiliary եմ” represent simple verbal predicates (նստած եմ, կանգնած եմ), otherwise – participial compound predicates (հոգնած եմ, վիրավորված եմ), b) the semantic distinction between present participle, perfect participle, and future participle is one of tense, not of aspect, hence the temporal difference between the present (գնում եմ), present perfect (գնացել եմ) and future (գնալու եմ), d) an attempt to distinguish between “non-situational time” and “situational time” as (sub- )categories of tense is misleading, e) aspectual distinctions characteristic of Modern Armenian are as follows: imperfective (expressed by imperfect -գնում էի) vs. perfective (expressed by aorist -գնացի); contingent, current state (ունեմ, եմ) vs. permanent, habitual state (ունենում եմ, լինում եմ); semelfactive, momentary (ցատկում եմ) vs. iterative (ցատկոտում եմ); progressive/habitual (գրում եմ) vs. iterative (գրոտում եմ); nonfrequentative/non-habitual (գրում եմ, գրել եմ, գրելու եմ) vs. frequentative/habitual (գրելիս եմ լինում, գրած եմ լինում, գրելու եմ լինում), the latter distinction being optional (non- obligatory).
