Аннотация

An assumption is made that the phoneme v of Iranian loanwords into Armenian, in all likelihood, still preserved its original semivowel character (=w) at the period of it being borrowed by Old Armenian, that is, in the Middle Iranian period. This assumption is based on a diachronictypological observation, according to which the phonetic development Ë(w) > (gw) > g usually implies the existence of the labiovelar semivowel w, and an analysis of the corresponding diachronic evidence from Iranian languages.
