Abstract

After the 11th cent. (1098 AD) the further development of manuscript tradition “A” of the Kanonagirk (“Armenian Book of Canons”) was differently directed. Numerous manuscripts of tradition “A” differ from each other by the groups of canons incorporated after the 57th (ԾԷ) canon group “Call to Repentance” by Hovhan Mandakuni and represent different subgroups of the manuscript tradition “A”. The next edition of the manuscript tradition “A” of the Kanonagirk represented by manuscripts No MM6409, 8926, 795, 2635, 6496, 2655, 2596 took place in the period  between the end of the 11th cent. (1098 AD) and the second half of the 12th century. Thus, after the 57th (ԾԷ) canon group of Hovhan Mandakuni’s “Call to Repentance” an anonymous editor or editors of this version added a group of “Canons of Patriarch  Simeon, Catholicos of the Caucasian Albanians”, including it into the list of contents and subject index compiled by himself. Another edition of the manuscript tradition “A” is represented by manuscripts No MM9488, 8158, 3706, 4403, 4631, 5782, 7317, 5894, 2883, 3099, 449, 3059, 3065. In these manuscripts the 57th canon group is followed by a group of canons ascribed to Basil of Caesarea “Third Canon Created by Patriarch Basil of Caesarea - 77 Chapters”; “About the Definition of Canons according to which Priests Repent” attributed to John Chrysostom, and the originals of Hacob Ghrimetsi “About the Rite of Marriage” and “About the Kinship”. After the 15th century (after 1416) and until the 17th century (before 1651) these canon groups were added to the 57 canonic groups of the manuscript tradition “A” without general or special numbering. In the XVII cent. (before 1651) these canon groups with the corresponding special and general numbering were included into the directory and subject index of the collection, receiving in the contents list regular numbers 58 (ԾԸ), 59 (ԾԹ) and 60 (Կ) (the works of Hacob Ghrimetsi were unified under number 60). This final edition of the manuscript tradition “A” of the Kanoanagirk is represented by manuscripts No MM7580 and 3291.
