Abstract

The study of the documents of the fourth Ecumenical Council, convened in 451 at Chalcedon, reveals the presence of about 25 representatives from
Armenian territories: among them - the Metropolitans from Armenia Minor - John of Sebaste and Constantine of Melitene, Simeon of Amida from Armenian Mesopotamia and Tsopk (Sophene), as well as Manasses of Theodosiopolis (Karin) from Great Armenia. The problem of the presence of Armenian bishops at Chalcedon is closely connected with their participation in the previous three Ecumenical Councils, the second (Constantinople, 381) and the third (Ephesus, 431) of which were declared Ecumenical in the Council of Chalcedon. Special attention should be paid on the question of the participation of Armenian Catholicosate of Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin) at the Ecumenical Council. Obviously, the Catholicosate was invited to Chalcedon but was unable to participate in the Council because of the revolt of Armenians against Persians.
