One of the known early medieval schools was the school of St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother) Monastery in Aragatsotn. It was founded by Theodoros Kotenavor the Hermit in the VII century. The future Catholicoses such as Sahak Dzoroporetsi (677-703) and st. Hovhan Odznettsi (717-728) used to be his students. Formerly the monastery erroneously was placed in Aruch which was not in the Aragatsotn province but in Shirak province. According to the inscription dating back to 867 the monastery is located in the village of Avan, Aragatsotn region. The V century church of St. Astvatsatsin is in half- ruined state standing in the mentioned village.
