The article sheds light on the social-political views of the 13rd century prominent thinker Hovhannes Yerznkatsi pointing out that remaining faithful to the philosophical style of the Middle Ages, the Armenian thinker links the issues related to power and governance to metaphysical, theological, anthropological and ethical questions thus making an attempt to find solutions in their context. Analyzing Hovhannes Yerznkatsi’s views on power and governance, the author reveals that firstly, there are some questions and solutions that mostly have a historical value while making it possible to have a comprehensive understanding of medieval mindset, the issues concerning medieval people and Armenian identity. Secondly, there are questions and solutions that have a theoretical value and they have not lost their actuality. It refers to the solution and suggestions related to such issues as rule of law, nature of power, humanitarian approach to governance processes, wise governance, moral characteristics of those who hold power, their attitude towards wealthy and arrogant intruders as well as issues related to establishment of social, ethnic and religious solidarity and tolerance.
