Abstract

In the article, discussing the place and the role of philosophy in the spiritual heritage of Saint Hovhan Imastaser (Philosopher) Odznetsi (†728), it is mentioned that in the focus of theoretical interests of the prominent representative of the late period of the Armenian Christian apologetics primarily were Christological-theological questions, particularly concerning the nature of Christ, the relationship between the divine and the human, the celestial and the terrestrial, the ideal and the material, the cognitive bases of iconoclasm and idolatry, and the relationship between the sensual and rational forms of cognition in the processes of learning about the God and the world. Though in the works of Odznetsi the philosophical material is intertwined with the religious-moral inquiries, and he did not specifically consider medieval philosophical issues, however, from the point of view of the history of philosophical and theological thought, his analyses on the philosophical and social-anthropological (ethical, aesthetic) foundations of idolatry, polytheism and atheism, as well as concerning theoretical provisions of doctrinal and Christological teachings of the iconoclasts (Pavlikans and docetists) are of a great interest.
