Abstract

“The History of Armenians” by Agathangelos, III-IV AD, is a unique source of Armenian medieval historiography. The work highlights the history and deeds of Gregory the Illuminator and king Tiridates III, who together initiated a great phenomenon, conversion from the traditional system of state paganism into Christianity and foundation of the Armenian Church. This article represents a series of records of the early medieval historian, stressing some details of mythology and pagan religion, images, and functions of Armenian pagan gods, their idols, temples and shrines, religious feasts and sacrifices. The historian also localizes the centers of the cult, tells on the struggle between local paganism and the new religion – Christianity, downfall of old sanctuaries and foundation of saint crosses, the formation of Christian churches, and appropriation of former pagan temple’s property, utensils and staff.
