Abstract

The religious worship of Saint Sargis and the Fast of Catechumens have been perceived differently in official and folk subcultures. The officialdoctrinal interpretation couldn’t influence popular perception, according to which different days of remembrance, being side by side in the church calendar, were consideredto be a united holiday called Saint Sargis Feast Day. This gave rise to inter-church andintercommunal cultural rivalry in areas with the mixed Armenian-Greek population(Constantinople and other places), as a result of which St. Sargis Feast Day was gradually left out from Greek church calendar being considered as Armenian. In fact, we dealwith a rare historical and cultural phenomenon when a church community (Greek) rejecting another community’s ritual and religious position (Armenian) in interfaith disputes, influences upon its own (Greek) official church, making it treat the official Armenian Church in the same way, although both the official churches have the samedoctrinal position on the issue.
