Abstract

Zoonyms in phytonyms have several functions. They can describe the plant’s physical appearance, quality, the relationship between the animal and the plant, etc.
There are a few interesting rules that govern their usage, in terms of both function and meaning. The phytonyms containing the words “dog” and “wolf” in Armenian and Persian illustrate these patterns well, as they are the largest attested group of plants in these languages with such names.
