Abstract
Publishing a satirical newspaper in the Soviet Union was a courageous act because the press was under the restrictions and prohibitions imposed by the censorship bodies. Nevertheless, on June 3, 1923 the first Armenian satirical newspaper “Shesht” (“Accent”) was published by Vahan Totovents in Yerevan. The objects of his satire were enlightenment, education, art, the clergy, some social issues and political themes. Only three issues of the periodical were published. Due to a short existence, “Shesht” wasn't fully established to provide a more saturated content and a design with caricatures. However, it became the starting point, at which further soviet Armenian satirical newspapers were established as a continuation.
