Abstract

The article highlights some peculiar characteristic episodes of Archbishop Khoren Galfayan’s (Nar-Pey’s) life and activity, who created quite a stir in Western Armenian sociopolitical and cultural life and at the same time played an honorable role in it in the second half of the 19th century, as well as elucidates peculiar features of his character and lifestyle. In the process of analysis causes of contradiction and dramatic life of the figure, the “intertwining of light and shadow” are revealed. One of Kh. Galfayan’s noteworthy plays, namely, the comedy “Alafranka” is analyzed in the context of Armenian drama and it is proved that besides being the first example of Western Armenian drama and possessing a certain ideological and aesthetic value, it has left a special a trace on the subsequent development of the genre of comedy.
