Abstract

In the 1990s, the inter-Party debate did not focus exclusively on domestic issues in the Republic of Armenia. The collapse of the USSR and the newly gained independence created a new reality for political debates, bringing foreign policy issues in the agenda of inter-party relations. In this context the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations found its way to become a major obstacle for inter-party agreement. During the final period of the USSR and first days of independence the political spectrum of Armenian had to face the lack of experience in relations with Turkey after 70 years of Soviet domination. Relations between Armenian and Turkish Republics were tense especially because of the Armenian Genocide issue and under these circumstances the political parties of Armenia could not agree whether the establishment of diplomatic relations with Turkey should prevail over any preconditions and especially the official recognition of the Genocide. Simultaneously the political parties of Armenia had fundamental differences in perception of Turkey as a threat to independent Armenia without the support of the Soviet Union.
