Abstract

In the 20s of the XVIII century coming out of the interests of the liberation movement in Karabakh and Syunik the Armenian people relied on the aid from Russia, and the Armenian clergy repeatedly sent letters to Petersburg. The main goal of Russia's interest in Transcaucasia at the beginning of the Persian campaign was the occupation of Shamakhi, which would ensure a strong connection between the Russian troops and the Christian peoples of the region. The invasion of Ottoman troops in Tiflis in 1723 influenced Russia’s plans in the Eastern Transcaucasia, which allowed the Ottomans to seize Eastern Armenia until 1728.
