Abstract
The author analyzes the inner political situation in Azerbaijan after the ceasefire of May 1994. The article presents Heydar Aliyev’s policy, which resulted in the strengthening of his power and position in Azerbaijan. A reference is made to Aliyev’s practice of getting rid of his political opponents, as well as the tactics of his propaganda, due to which their apparent defeat in Karabakh War was presented as a temporary armistice. The introduction of the Azerbaijanism theory based on Turkishness and Islamism, which became the ideological basis of Aliyev’s regime, is also being analyzed.
