Abstract

The May Uprising of 1920 is one of the disputable issues of the modern period of Armenian history, which has been evaluated differently in historiography. The May Uprising was qualified as a democratic, heroic one. Soviet Armenian historians wrongly believed, that in case of the victory of the Uprising in the autumn of 1920, the Kemalists would not have attacked the RA and there wouldn't have been territorial losses, which happened as a result of the Turkish-Armenian War. A completely opposite view is developed by the Dashnak historians, who consider the May Uprising to be a stab in back of the RA by the Bolsheviks. The extremely different approaches to the May uprising do not allow researchers to fully analyze this fundamental issue and to come to fair conclusions. Our goal is to qualify the records of the May uprising, to clarify the point of view existing in historiography, i.e. whether we would have a larger territory had Armenia been Sovietized in May, and substantiate why the first stage of the process of Sovietization failed.
