Abstract
Since ancient times Armenian plateau has been a crossroad for the migration of both big and small nations most of which merged with each other or disappeared, and their tracks can often be restored only by the remaining ancient proper names. The Armenian proper names of the Armenian-Hittite isoglosses make an extensive layer in the language. These roots are not loan-words, they form a substrate in ancient Armenian, and some of them are productive even today. For example, tam / dam «build»> տուն in Armenian “house” – Angeghatun, Agravatun, Aghavnatun, šuppi «clean»> սուրբ in Armenian “holy” – Surb, Srbahan, Srbanist, Srbuhi, išha «boss, Mr.»> իշխան in Armenian “prince” – Ishkhanasar, Ishkhanadzor, Ishkhananist, Ishkhan, ųappu «riverbank»> ափն in Armenian “shore” – Apnagyugh, Apna, Apum, Getap, A’-s-ti-ųa-su-s or Astuųatimaīs anthroponym> աստված in Armenian “god” –Astvatsynkal, Astvatsamayr, Astvatsaberd, Astvatsatsin, Astvatsatur, etc.
