Abstract

The response of the French press to the centenary of the Armenian Genocide was unique. In contrast, say, to the British or American press, the French response differed in that, in the view of the French press and society, the Genocide is a fact that happened and is irrefutable.

From 2014 to 2015 (including April 2015), six French daily newspapers (« Le Parisien », « Le Monde », « Les Échos », « La Libération », « Le Figaro », « La Tribune ») published some 335 pieces overall, of which around 300 specifically dealt with the Genocide issue. The other pieces dealt with French-Turkish and Turkish-American relations and the Syrian crisis, particularly regarding events in Kessab, in which indirect references are made to the Genocide issue. In general, from 2014-2015 the French media presented a many-sided picture of the Armenian Genocide. It not only talked about developments that occurred but also examined different facts linked to the issue. It published stories and insights that conveyed emotion and impact to the media backdrop regarding genocide
