Abstract

Since 1915 in the Near East operated two American charity organizations: Armenian and Syrian relief committees, which took care of thousands of Armenian orphans who miraculously survived the Armenian Genocide. They took care of these children in their orphanages. From the union of these two committees the Near East Relief was organized in 1918. From 1919 to 1931 the Near East Relief did the same great job in Armenia cooperating with the governments of the First Republic of Armenia and the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. The Near East Relief created a wide set of orphanages in Armenia, which took care of 26 thousand orphans. It also opened kindergartens, schools, craftsmanship, nursing, pedagogical colleges. The educational process of these institutions was organized with due care and attention under the superintendence of the Ministry of Education of Armenia, and children received their education appropriate to the state program.
