Abstract

During the First World War, Entente states discussed the problem of landing in Cilicia. The discussions started with new strength, when it became clear that the Dardanelles operation failed. But during these discussions in autumn 1915, the idea of negotiations with Djemal Pasha was put forward. Russian authorities knew that Djemal was willing to cooperate with the Allies; in return for this he hoped to seize power in Turkey and to be proclaimed Sultan. However, in that case Britain and France would lose the opportunity to gain the territories of the Ottoman Empire. That was the reason why the negotiations with Djemal did not take place. However, this idea became one of the reasons, which prevented the projects of landing in Cilicia. Preventing the negotiations on the one hand and landing failure on the other, eventually led to annihilation of a few hundred thousand Armenian refugees concentrated in the deserts of Syria.
